There is a common thread in The Virgin Islands, blacklisting. I remember attending the Hotel Association meetings where the major concern was getting the natives in line and making them better servants. I asked them about a management training program, they laughed.

There is no serious effort to share the tourism wealth with Virgin Islanders, only strategy to to blacklist those who will not comply. The problem the Hotel Association is having, too many discontent Virgin Islanders. Virgin Islanders don't get promoted, they bring in someone from the states, for the Virgin Islander to train.

15% of the population controls the wealth in The Virgin Islands. Virgin Islanders are fighting hard to control the government. Now that there is a white Senator from St. John, native black St. John residents are seeing "Jim Crow" signs.  There is a lot of racial tension on St. John and St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. A doctor on St. Croix said publicly that he is discriminated against in his own home daily.

No Justice No Peace.  Board of Directors of non profit organizations are closed to most Virgin Islanders. There must be a significant effort to include Virgin Islanders as beneficiaries of tourism.

The Hotel Associations give certain businesses their stamp of approval, indicating if a business is not on their approval list, it won't be safe.  My family owned a restaurant and fine art gallery, across from a Marriott Hotel. Many guest, having a great time at our business, told me and my staff what was said. Hotel guest were told it wasn't safe to walk across the street my our restaurant. I called the St. Thomas, St. John Hotel Association and ask them to stop the negative comments or else.

The mobile food restaurants have some of the best local food. Gladys Restaurant in Royal Dane Mall has West Indian Food. Please try the vegetarian food in St. Thomas, West Indian Style, Four Winds has the Veggie Table.  Most Virgin Islanders have a healthier diet and  smoking is not part of the West Indian Culture in The Virgin Islands.

Go to Coki Point Beach and eat at Keesh Loraine, tell Kim, Keesh and Loraine, Nanci sent you from her web site and tell her I said hi.

There is no palpable effort or plan to help move the people forward. 98% of the "local art" in The Virgin Islands is from artists from the states. Finally, one or two Virgin Island art students have gone away to an art college. Art galleries in the Virgin Islands must include native Virgin Island Artists, more than just a few tokens.

Virgin Islanders must start to take care of themselves and each other, buy more land, especially in St. John.  But be careful, some will want to charge you more for the land than someone else. You may want to have a white friend help you.  Yes things are that bad in The Virgin Islands, but they are also that bad in the Continental United States. That is why we needed a fair housing authority, and laws against discrimination, are still being broken.

There are good and bad people everywhere. The good people of every color and nationality must stand together and make the world we live in more civilized.  Look into mentoring. What could happen if each one of us help another less fortunate.

Jewish people mentored African Americans in the US. My father who was an engineer, was mentored by Jewish professionals he worked with. I have been mentored, so many people have been good to me, and that is what I think about when I encounter racism.

Corruption only exist when good people do nothing.

THE WEBLOG FROM PARADISE -
We need peace in The Virgin Islands. Before we can improve, each of us, we must confront and accept the truth. I enjoy very much living here in St. Thomas, but I refuse to lie and say we don't have very, very serious problems. Like most of the world, greedy corporations are trying to turn America's Paradise into a third world country.

Peace be with you,
 Madame Samb
